I bumped into our addictive little hobby in 1992 when I read a blurb about original comic art in the John Byrne's Next Men letter column and cold-called Jim Warden. Jim spent almost an hour with me on Comic Art 101, and it's been downhill for the wallet ever since.
I lived in my own little collecting world for a year or so until I made the acquaintance of Mark Ou on the old rec.arts.comics.misc message board. Mark introduced me to Steve Davis, Bruce Lowry, Jim Reid, Eric Hinton, Benny Gelillo, Bob Jewell and Kane Warton, who were swapping letters and copies through the good ol' USPS non-electronic mail. I had entered the hobby knowing only Byrne, Miller, Simonson, Sienkiewicz, Paul Smith and Butch Guice, and being exposed to a world of new art and artists turbocharged my collecting in spite of the "high" prices art was beginning to command. Byrne X-Men pages topping $500, over $1G for a Bolland cover, Mignola pages for $150... crazy money!
I use to say I stopped considering myself a newbie collector just in time to view myself as a semi-retired collector, but I now realize there's no retirement, just longer times between purchases. As Richard Martines famously said, "One great piece a year makes a fantastic collection."
