Brief Introduction to Modern Manga History... At the end of the Second World War, Ozamu Tezuka, rightly seen as the father of modern manga, crystallized a great number of manga codes. In endeavoring to depict movement, he was one of the inventors of lines running through a square, which heightened the intensity of action, and of “big eyes,” which take up a considerable amount of a character’s face and have been highly criticized in the West. Nevertheless, according to his friend and translator Frederik L. Schodt, Tezuka’s inspiration for the eyes of characters like Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy) in 1952 came from American culture, which had entered Japanese soil in the form of Walt Disney’s Bambi and Betty Boop, a character created by Max Fleischer’s studio in the 1930s and which also did not arrive in Japan until after the war. Atomu’s design was innovative and, once adapted for the Japanese public, became a huge success. Other artists followed suit, gracing the faces of their characters with the same distinctive pairs of eyes. Osamu Tezuka became known under the honorable title of manga kamisama, “the God of manga.” The whole of his works cover some 150,000 pages, including over 700 mangas and seventy animated series, the vast majority of which are only available in the original Japanese. On February 9, 1989, the date of the master’s death, the newspaper Asahi Shimbun published the following: “Foreign visitors to Japan often find it difficult to understand why Japanese people like comics so much. One explanation for the popularity of comics in Japan, however, is that Japan had Tezuka Osamu, whereas other nations did not. Without Dr. Tezuka, the postwar explosion in comics in Japan would have been inconceivable.” Japanese Traditionnal Animation... The most esteemed mangas are adapted to cartoons. Animation was Osamu Tezuka’s real passion, and in January 1963, he directed the first weekly Japanese animated series for TV based on one of his works: Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy). In America, NBC purchased the distribution rights, and Fred Laderman—better known as Fred Ladd—a specialist in cartoon dubbing, was commissioned to adapt 104 of 193 episodes of this televised series for the American market. The success of this reformatted Astro Boy paved the way for other works by Osamu Tezuka: Gigantor (Tetsujin 28-go) in 1964 and Kimba the White Lion (Janguru Taitei), the first animated television series to appear in color, in 1965. The American market owes a great deal to these two men: Ozamu Tezuka for his creativity and Fred Ladd for granting audiences access to Japanese animation in English. Since the 1960s, Japanese animation has shaped several generations of children in front of their television set. This medium claims to be even more powerful than the big screen, which paved the way for popular pictures three decades earlier, because TV transports the culture of the “Land of the Rising Sun” via Hertzian waves directly into viewers’ living rooms. Be it in the United States, Arabic-speaking countries, Europe, or Asia, anyone with a TV has at one point in his life been stirred in front of the adventures of Japanese characters. These are the same people who, regardless of their social class, were thrilled in front of their family TV set—that babysitter of the 1980s—and for whom Japanese animation has become the transporter of global identification.
