DescriptionMAGNIFICENT FINISHED MUSEUM QUALITY PAINTING PRESENTATION PIECE FOR THE CANNERY FOR HUGE 10 FOOT TALL BY 8 FOOT WIDE AIR BRUSHED OUTDOOR STORE SIGNRick Griffin was a good friend of mine since 1973 when he first wandered into the Berkeley California comic book store Comics & Comix on Telegraph Ave at Dwight Way I was a founding partner in with the late John Barrett (RIP)and Bud Plant now in that galaxy far far away. We traded C&C's old comic books & pulps for his original art, with me first ending up with his original cover to the Print Mint edition of Tales From The Tube. By 1991 I had became Rick's last art agent and semi-partner when we opened a Rick Griffin Art Gallery in The Cannery at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Rick Griffin created several business logos, store signage, insisting that the gallery also carry comic strip book items from around the world as he remained true to all the art fields he enjoyed working in. He could never forget his Zap Comics involvement and in this piece he also pays homage to his Von Dutch roots. My friend in 1991 was then coming down from his mid-age crisis, consciously tuning back into his kids, wanting to create new art as he began the next level of his extra-ordinary career. Gaze into the detail of the crowned winged eye ball to understand where Rick's mind was at. He was at peace with himself. He was supremely confidant with his artistic abilities. One hand on the lightning bolt of life trying to get him. The other grasping pen and ink brushes as he settled into a life of creating art for his millions of fans to enjoy. I helped him paint the finished outdoor sign which had the halo altered to a king's crown in the final final, as he realized he was the top dog of the concert posters we all love to enjoy and collect , as in holding his cans of paint and passing a joint back & forth, keeping it lit for him. We had a lot of fun in those days prepping this art gallery devoted to his work. This is the finished presentation piece Rick devised for Chris Martin, owner of The Cannery, to approve Rick's plan for the huge finished over-hang sign as you came into our humble establishment. Little did Rick know, Chris also was a huge fan of his work as well. The approval time took less than 30 seconds. We were told that was the fastest approval in the then-history of The Cannery. Long time ago now in a galaxy far far away. Later that same year after a tremendous amount of hard work and money laid out, Rick Griffin had his most unfortunate motorcycle accident. I miss my friend. We went to First Showing First Day of the 1989 Batman premiere at the Coronet Theatre over on Geary in San Fran. He was such a fan of the best of culture world-wide -:) He parked the Harley that was later in the fatal accident blocking the front door to my Haight Ashbury store, sauntered in, kicked out all the customer browsers, and told me he had two tickets to the first showing. How do you say no to Rick Griffin? I miss the new art which would have been created in past 20 years come August 15. Social/Sharing |
