Description

Cover to Strange Passages from 2005, 10.5" x 15.5" image area on slightly larger board. I haven't seen the project this is from, so I don't know what to say about it... other than that the interior, no matter how good it is, has got to be a disappointment compared to the cover. The detail and tonality of the inking is astonishing, especially in some areas of the foreground, where MS hasn't drawn a hard edge and blacked up to it, but instead has left a softer edge for a more natural feel to the surfaces. There is very little white paint used to clean up white areas or create highlights, only a few spots here and there. The subject matter isn't my favorite stuff from MS, I prefer his Xenozoic Tales material, but the work itself is truly amazing. As with any original art, seeing it in person is far better than any scan, but this is possibly the most flagrant example of that I've ever seen. Shown in V2 of his Various Drawings series, as well as the collected edition Portfolio.
