DescriptionCover to Savage Sword of Conan #6, 2019, art by David Finch. Story by Meredith Finch. Also used as a poster. 17"x22" made of 2 sheets of 11"x17" comic art bristol, image area approx. 12.5"x19.5" off-centre on boards. Although this is a cover not a dps, DF has used 2 boards together to allow enough room to fit in the incredible detail. Due to the printed cover proportions, it doesn't quite fill the whole area, so I've cropped it here for convenient viewing. Pencils and inks are usually 2 separate jobs in comic art creation, 'though there are some artists who do both. Inking is often under-rated, and it's a mistake to think it's a simple as tracing what's there in pencil just to make it darker. The inker imposes a certain amount of their own style onto the finished product, no matter how tight the pencils or how closely they're followed. Although DF has done the whole job at times in the past, most of us think of him as a penciller. Recently, however, he has taken to doing complete pieces from start to finish, and the comic art market is all the better for it. Not that he hasn't benefitted from some excellent inkers on his pencils, but when an artist does both jobs as skillfully as this, you're getting the truest testament to their vision of how the drawing should look. What took me by surprise was that according to DF, the vast majority of the drawing and shading in his current art is done during the finishing stage, using a variety of different pens and brushes. It's therefore a bit inaccurate to say that he has 'inked his own work', when most of the drawing is in fact directly in ink, not pencil. I'm also particularly excited about his rendition of everyone's favourite barbarian, who sometimes looks a bit too smooth and civilized; this is Conan as he was meant to be, veiny, hard-edged and dangerous. I'm especially glad to have nabbed this cover, and have my fingers crossed that we might see a complete Conan stand-alone issue or mini-series by DF in the future. Social/Sharing |

Beautiful. I really like the direction Dave has taken his work with his own inks recently, and I told him so. Detailed and gritty, with superb light logic. Good stuff.

Wow! Just an outstanding example of Finch's work, from start to finish. Great dynamic face off layout and the inking detail is just out of this world. Sincere congrats!
