Was this from the Doom Patrol book they had the back story in?? If I had seen this, it would have been on my priority list to buy.

Yes, it is from the Doom Patrol back up feature. The Doom Patrol was long winded and serious while the Metal Men back up was simple fun. Reading the two in the same comic was somewhat weird for me.
