DescriptionEven though I started reading comics in the early '80s, my prime period for comics is 1986-1996 (age 10-20), and not many artists during that time were bigger than Todd McFarlane. His Hulk stuff was interesting, but I didn't know it was him drawing it until later, but I did occasionally read it. But I was always a Spidey and Daredevil kid, so when he started on Amazing Spider-man I finally noticed enough to pay attention to who an artist was on a book, as I never really thought about it before. (I was 11 or 12 in 1988) But it was a huge rush to see such a different and energetic style on the book. I was blown away. Spider-man has always been my favorite comic hero as a kid, and even though I grew to read virtually everything and love quite a wide variety of stuff from various publishers throughout my teens, classic Spidey is still my all-time favorite character. This page in particular offers a lot with Spidey in costume in every panel, sexy Mary Jane in 2 panels, and a nice splashy page signed by Todd in red ink. (I'd love webbing too but that's another few grand lol.) So to finally have a McFarlane Spider-man page of my own feels AMAZING! :)This piece is a huge dream come true for me that has taken many years in the hobby to pull off. Since I got into the hobby, McFarlane Spider-man pages were always just out of reach due to cost. I have never had a lot of money to spend on art so I tend to work deals and hustle a little more than your average collector to pull things off. Whenever my finances would improve, the prices would go up too. If $200 was a lot for me to spend, they were $1000. If $1k was a lot for me, they would be over $2k. And on and on it has gone for years and years. So as I have been doing a lot of selling and trading lately to trade up and get these more expensive pieces I have never been able to afford, it finally started to seem possible that I could work a big deal or something and finally get one of my own. So I have been really looking hard for an available page for about the last year and almost thought I might get one off of ComicLink last Dec, but those went higher than I had too. But a nice collector reached out and had a page he would sell but he needed all the cash at once with no trade or time payments so I tried to sell a bunch of stuff and just couldn't seem to find buyers. Soon it became clear I wouldn't be getting that McFarlane page either, so I started looking elsewhere. Enter Anthony Snyder, art dealer extraordinaire! He and I have bought and sold to each other over the years through eBay and at SDCC in person, but we have never managed to work a trade, although we did try once before when I was still new to trading. But based on that relationship I reached out to him and offered him the pieces I was trying to sell in trade along with the cash I had raised for the other page and we ended up talking it over on the phone while I was at work and managed to work a deal right then and there. I sent the money and art and once he received everything he sent me my piece. This was all within the last 8 days or so, so it was smooth and fast and we are both happy. Dreams can come true! Cheers on a good get. I like Joe's inks on this page. He keeps everything under control and grounded without losing McFarlane's style or energy.
