Description

In 1995, off the back of Wizard of the Coast's huge success on MTG, Armada (a division of Acclaim comics, which bought Valiant), started publishing range of comics based on the card game.

This was one of the first off the ranks - I believe it ties with Ice Age in terms of release dates.

Val Mayerik Magic the Gathering "Shadow Mage" Cover Original Art (Armada, 1995). A great piece of fantasy work by comics veteran Mayerik in mixed media on illustration board with an edge to edge image area of 13.5" x 20.5". There is some light edge and corner wear, and bottom left corner is torn. Signed in lower area and in Very Good condition.

This does have the look of the cards and Mayerik's painted style was an extension of the great sword and sorcery work his did for Marvel in the 70's.

Indeed! Also hard to fathom that Val also did work for Howard the Duck!

Mayerik is a very talented painter as exhibited by this painting.
