DescriptionCully Hamner, one of my fav’ artists, began his professional career on Green Lantern Mosaic, an offbeat title (an experiment really) on which Cully’s artistic progression, much like other members from the legendary Gaijin studio, is truly spectacular from a very crude start to a much more solid last issue.Just after ending his run on GL Mosaic, he drew this fill in issue of the Surfer and right before he began drawing Firearm for Malibu comics, an excellently written title from James Robin-son. I’ve loved his art from the beginning simply because it was different and what the Gaijin guys brought to the art table was a breeze of fresh air, especially at the time of the formation of Image when all that teeth grinding violence could be a bit much. Cully’s art and storytelling would get much (MUCH) better over the years obviously, but I find a certain charm in these early efforts. The Surfer and Firelord certainly never looked like this before. In the first panel, Firelord makes use of that fiery rod to clobber the Surfer off his board which I find amusing. I mean, for all their power, he basically beats him with a stick. The fiery arch that goes from the Surfer, going off panel, to the rod is a nice bit. Then we have the impact of the Surfer into a nearby planetoid. The impact is big but to be frank, I find this needs a bit of color for a clearer understanding of what’s happening on the page. As the Surfer is recovering from the blow in panels 3 and 4, I love the way Hamner reversed the shadows here. You see everything but his eyes in panel 3 and then as Firelord comes total-ly over him in the fourth, he overshadows him but his eyes. Then the best panel of the page showing us a very determined Firelord announcing to the Surfer that he intends on killing him. The fact that his eyes are drenched in shadows has him looking much more menacing I find. On a general note, Cully was drawing every character like monster bodybuilders in those days (à la Bart Sears) and his John Stewart was basically Ronnie Coleman. The same can be said of his version of the Surfer and Firelord here. I also really like how he drew Firelord’s flames in this story, both on his body and weapon as you really feel a sense of constant movement in them. On that same topic, the fumes emanating from the Surfer’s body in panels 3 and 4 are also nice. I’m not convinced that Tom Christopher, the usual inker of the book at the time, was Cully’s most suited inker but he did a competent job on the inks, following Cully’s sharp angle-y line with solid blacks. awesome cosmic Surfer page!!! Especially love the transition from panel 3 to 4 with the shadow reversal you mentioned. Great dynamic art, congrats!

Hamner is a perpetually underrated and versatile artist. Really loved his work on GL:Mosaic, so it's a natural he could take on a cosmic hero like the Surfer, but he also excels with the street-level heroes like Batman and The Question.

Hot cosmic battle page! Firelord drops a killer of a mic drop in the last panel!

Great looking backgrounds. Not only the outer space settings, which we all love, naturally, but also the broken stone in panel two. My favourite thing about this page is Firelord's appearance, though. His has always been a favourite character design of mine and he always seems to look pretty bad ass whenever he appears.

Hamner definitely gets better, but this is another great "early artist" example in your collection, Fred! Always interesting to see the origins of our favorite creators, and here's a cosmic-sized plate of opportunity served up for us. Really love that bottom tier of three panels and how Cully (and Tom) used the shadows there. Honestly, can you ever go wrong with Heralds of Galactus beating the tar out of each other (and leaving divots in the surrounding planets)? Fun stuff, Fred - congrats!

Takes me back to one of my fave early issues, SS #19, vs Firelord! Throwback feel for me but still ALL Hamner. Congrats!
