DescriptionJust a nice commission or convention drawing from the 90s (93 or 95?) by an artist who disappeared from the published scene much to my sadness as I always loved his heavily Neal Adams influenced (yet remaining distinctly his) style. The Bat and the Cat. The composition is simple but works well. The Jim Balent proportioned Catwoman is super sexy. I find that his women have always been the most distinctive trait in Hawbaker’s art. They are immediately identifiable as his. And while she has no feet, a peculiar and usual 90s drawing shortcut many might say, it makes sense within the composition. The drenched in shadows stylized 90s Batman works super well, especially the folds of the cape which reminds me of Mike Grell Shaman’s Tears logo. You can see that the choice of heavy shadows came later in the drawing as his left eye was first fully drawn. Both the perfect circle which sets up the moon nicely and the addition of the crudely sketched bats remind me of those Spanish Warren artist of the 70s (à la Esteban Maroto). I wish Hawbaker was still drawing comics. His style was strong and confident when he was published so I wonder how it evolved and matured. I was in contact a few years ago for a commission and then communication stopped at some point on his side. Social/Sharing |

The way she has her tail formed, I almost expect to see the Riddler pop out at any moment. There was a time in the 80's when Adams was my favourite artist. But since he was no longer really drawing for Marvel or DC, I could only satiate my hunger by buying back issues of his work which I really couldn't afford. Instead, I discovered his line of Continuity Comics and began buying all of those titles, simply because all the artists had to ape his style. I was so desperate to see Adams art in new comics that I was willing to accept any and all clones. But then I got older and realized that while it's cool that you can emulate a legend's style, it's far better if after some time you develop your own. This is a fun sketch though, as I like the playfulness and really enjoy seeing the very long eared cowl!

I believe you were not alone in your approach.
I would say that many of the "Adams influenced" artists were strong artist in their own right though.
That being said, you must have suffered a bit if you tried to read the Conitnuity titles (for the dialogues alone à la "I smithe thee in the name of justice, you scoundrel!" ).

Yes, Adams is a perfectionist and has very strong opinions on people's drawing abilities, so first and foremost you had to already have a very strong foundation. The ability to ape his style was secondary to that.
Oh and yes, the irony is that my favourite artist at the time was simultaneously the worst scripter to ever work in comics. I mean, you didn't even need to try reading the stories. The small amount of dialogue on a cover alone was enough to make you bury your head in your hands and shake it side to side.

Great pin up! It has all the earmarks of that era and straddles the realism and symbolism that great illustrations of the times had. Portfolio reviews were more brutal as there were people around the block trying to break into the hot market back then, so there might have been a less stressful route for an artistic career.

S.Clarke was working with Grell around this time on the Starslayer Director's Cut, so good call on the cape pattern similarity.
Really nice piece!

Too bad he didn't work on it past the first issue as I really liked the combo ;)

Agreed on Hawbaker, just love his work on Nomad - my understanding is that he couldn't keep up with the deadlines. Definitely wish he had more out there, stuff of his is hard to track down these days. Very cool piece.

Well, at least they didn't add a bunch of pouches! I actually had not heard of this artist before, but I really like that composition. Sexy but fierce, too. And I dig how Batman is dark and Catwoman is light, matching their personality but not their drive. This is a nicely done commission. Congrats!
