Description

This striking page is taken from a fully painted, wonderful book (every single panel is a little gem in and of itself) which tells the adventures of Giuseppe Pignata, scholar, philosopher and scientist sentenced to life imprisonment for heresy by the Roman Inquisition and ingeniously escaped on November 9, 1693, after 22 months of preparations.

The story, based on the diaries of Pignata himself, was written by one of the greatest Italian comic artists: the master Roberto Raviola, called Magnus (1939-1996). Together with the very talented painter and illustrator Sergio Tisselli (1957-2020) they spent years in the making, to finally achieve an undisputed masterwork, I dare say even beyond comic art!

The work was first published as a serialized story and in 3 separate books between the late 80s and the early 90s, then it was finally collected in a single volume in various editions from 2009.

Nice painted use of warm and cool tones. The rain effect is lovely too!

Thanks Rick, of course I totally agree, and as for the rain effect, it has been obtained by scratching the artboard with a razor blade (it's told that Magnus himself did that)

Anything on CAF by Magnus with more than two panels is quite a treat! Tisselli's interiors and exteriors carry this sequence as we follow the candle flame throughout the page.
