Description

Keith Giffen's art has always appealed to me. But I really started to take notice when he developed his trademark nine-panel page style in the Baxter LOSH and the followup "Five Years Later" LOSH series. In a lot of ways, Trencher feels like the natural progression/development of that style. While there are some pages out there from Images of the Shadowhawk, Trencher pages themselves are hard to come by. This particular piece is the first published Trencher image. When Giffen worked on Trencher, his approach was to put pen to paper and not lift up. If he made a mistake, he started over. Looking at the detail of the piece, I'd hate to have been the colourist!!! It's a great piece and many thanks to my fellow CAF colleague, John, for agreeing to part with it.

No comments on this one? I never read Trencher, but this splash, with all its hyper-details, is a stunning example of technique and style.

Throughout his career, Giffen was accused of aping the style of other artists. Kirby, Munoz, Maguire...but Trencher was and will forever be his alone. I loved the in-your-face feel of this comic. Loved the artwork, too, and it's so hard to find. Congratulations!
