Description

For years, what "turned me off" of Fiction House art was that the colorist would cover the original with codes for color. Other companies made color guides on a separate sheet or sent notes to the colorist. Fiction House wrote all over the original in blue pencil. Time passes and realizing that there was some great art to come out of Fiction House. Art by Joe Doolin, Lily Renee, Murphy Anderson, Matt Baker, George Evans, Nick Cardy, Ruben Moreira, Bob Lubebrs and a host of others. So, I relented. I was hooked.

This is a splash page from what I understand to be the last appearance of Futura in Planet Comics. This character appeared in only 20 (intermittent) issues of Planet Comics with several artists drawing stories. This page was done by the Italian artist, Enrico Bagnoli (who drew at least five stories). The fact that he was Italian (and worked in Milan) may explain why all the captions and word balloons are pasted on and have fallen off in the 67 years since this saw print. Compared to some of the early, cruder work by Anderson, Cardy and Lubbers that appeared in Planet Comics, this art was very slick and polished... perhaps inspired by Raymond and Foster.

I have been looking for information on Enrico Bagnoli and found "snippets". And while I see references that he did work for DC as well as Fiction House, it appears that most of his work was done for European publishers. I'd love to know more.
