DescriptionFrom the chilling tale “The Human Bombs and…the Spectre,” (DC, 1975) written by Michael Fleisher. This thrilling scene depicts the awesome Spectre in full action, as he follows his beloved Gwendolyn Sterling, who has been hypnotized by an evil scientist, to the villain’s secret lair where he confronts him for his wicked deeds. This is absolutely gorgeous work by both Chan and Aparo as they execute the Astral Avenger with the raw primal power he was originally created during the Golden-Age. The second panel is especially exceptional, featuring the Spectre materializing into his classic costume as he elegantly sweeps his left arm down with his cloak to fashion a protective covering arc over Gwen in his car – great subtle subtext here by Chan. The larger splash (fifth) panel is another great image of the Spectre who bursts out from the scientist’s Hypno-Wheel, which he has been using to control innocent people to do his evil bidding. This is another excellent example of how writer Fleisher has our hero turn the tables on his nefarious adversaries by utilizing their own wicked inventions against them – an apropos ironic twist of fate. The Golden-Age great pronounces final judgment upon his adversary, “The Valley of Death is long…and…wide…so that the GOOD men who have perished need not suffer the stench arising from the souls that are…EVIL…!” The page is completed with a wonderful close-up of the Spectre looking with upon his doomed victim with righteous fury. The Spectre was created by legendary writer, Jerry Siegel (who also co-created Superman with Joe Shuster) and artist Bernard Baily as the lead-off star feature in More Fun Comics, beginning with issue #52 (DC/ February, 1940). He is a founding member of the famed Justice Society of America (see All-Star Comics #3). The Spectre is the first, foremost and greatest of all supernatural superheroes. Social/Sharing |
