DescriptionIn August of 1978, at the age of 11, I met the man who would change my collecting interests forever. In conjunction with the San Diego Comic Convention, which was being held at the El Cortez Hotel (for the last time at that facility), the Old Town Circle Gallery was hosting a one man showing of Bob Kane's original artwork and Limited Edition Lithographs. My family went down to the gallery where we met and befriended Kane himself, who ending up staying with us at our home for a whole week after the Comic Con. I was instantly transformed into huge and hopeless Batman fan and collector - especially the first year of Batman’s adventures, spanning from Detective Comics #27-#37 (1939-1940).Kane did a myriad of commission pieces for us, ranging from full paintings to blue washes to pen and ink sketches. But, of them all my absolute favorite one is this wonderful re-creation of Batman’s very first appearance from panel 1 of page 3 in Detective Comics #27 (May, 1939) he drew right in front of me at our kitchen counter (he used the Famous First Edition reprint of Detective #27 for his reference). Man, Bob could could draw Batman in his sleep! This is that artwork - The Bat-Man the way he was originally created and drawn by his creator. ULTRA COOL, for sure and it just doesn't get any better than this! The #1 Favorite piece in my entire collection! Social/Sharing |

Maybe one of the most under appreciated commissions on CAF. Actually, I take that back, not maybe.

Rob, an incredibly significant art piece of the most popular and recognizable character in comics, drawn by his creator! Bob Kane's art is sometimes avoided because its authenticity comes into question quite often, but here is a breathtaking piece that was drawn in front of you, in your own house, by Bob Kane! Its provenance is so secure that this piece is basically priceless and it would qualify as a grail in anyone's collection!

It is a VERY SPECIAL PIECE that reflects back upon a very special time in my young boyhood. Bob was very kind to me and this piece is my most favorite in my entire collection. Fond memories, indeed!

The drawing, like your story, is Bat-Tastic! Imagine having Bob Kane as a houseguest for a week. Comic History Nirvana. You were a lucky boy!
