DescriptionThe local paper asked if they could run an article about my original art collection. I said, "Why Not". Hope you enjoy the article.Personal Treasures: Collectors have a passion for pieces of history! Among Eric Marshall's wide-ranging collection of comic books and die-cast cars are original pieces of comic book art. The hand-drawn originals, which printed versions are taken from, come on 11x17 paper and are black and white. For Eric Marshall of Owatonna, that means comic books and original comic book art. Original comic book drawings are done in black and white on 11x17 paper before being colored in, shrunk and printed. One of Marshall's favorites is a splash page from The Punisher. A splash page is where one large picture takes up the entire page. Marshall buys many of his pieces online, and sells some too. He bought one piece online for $300 and later sold it for $3,000. "A guy offered $2,370 and that got my attention," Marshall said. In light of the high initial offer, he bargained the price up to $3,000. He admitted the large profit is not the norm. The drawing, "Fathom" by Michael Turner, was actually valued at $800, but the buyer was willing to pay a premium for it. Marshall began collecting original art in the late 1980s, and it grew out of his hobby of collecting comic books. While surfing on a Web site, he found an unpublished page from an issue of The Punisher, and his art collection was born. "I've been fortunate through comic book conventions to meet some of my favorite artists," said Marshall. He has also commissioned several pieces at shows, where an artist draws what he asks for. Marshall still collects comic books. Every Wednesday he goes to The Little Professor Book Center to pick up new issues. He mostly follows The Punisher, but he also collects comic books with Wolverine from the X-Men and the new Marvel Civil War comic books. Little Professor Book Center owner John Meixner said the Civil War comics depict a war amongst all the different Marvel characters and sell well. He said comics have steadily increased in popularity as more movies and television shows are based on comic books. Some collectors buy two copies of the books, he said, one to read and one to seal up for their collection. In addition to comics, sports cards remain a popular collectible, although kids are often priced out of the hobby. "It's not a children's activity anymore," Meixner said. "It's for people with full-time jobs." Some packs even run into the hundreds of dollars. However, Meixner said, when people buy those packs, they are usually guaranteed a game jersey or autographed card. While game cards like Pokemon, Pogs and Magic: The Gathering made a dent in the card business for a while, Meixner said most people have lost interest in them. One thing people never seem to lose interest in, however, is their personal history. Social/Sharing |
