DescriptionSo this is the next splash from the Avengers Heroes Return to the one that I posted last week by the all-star team of Ed McGuinness and Mark Morales. This post was prompted by a friend who reacted to my last week’s post by saying that Belasco is a pussy while Mephisto is true OG devil of the Marvel Universe. This got me thinking that I could have a theme following his strange belief. So here we go, we have 20 Mephistos from all over the multiverse (including 5 in shadows mode). This is the 1st appearance of the Council of red (a fun concept even if the clear tendency over the last few years has been to introduce multiverse groups of the same characters all over the place). The fun is obviously in spotting all the versions of the characters. Dog-Phisto (…) is up his pedestal, then we have a more super-villainy version, a Hamephisto, a penis Mephisto (I leave you gents to have fun spotting it/him as Marvel clearly didn’t), a female version (did she give Adam the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, I wonder…). Fun! (and bricks for all you fetishists). Ed did a great job at showcasing that 616 Mephisto is the top dog here (…). The top position, flames and crown and all that. As always great use of light and shadows by Mr Morales. Just a phenomenal splash all around. You can almost hear those evil churches choirs in the background. Thanks Ed ;) Social/Sharing |

Multiversal Mephistos? Council of Red? Oh, my, I've missed something both incredible and smack-dab in the middle of my wheelhouse. I think I need to see a buddy comedy series with Husky Mephisto (I'm big-boned!) and Mephisto-Pig. Has Spider-Pig done something Faustian in one of the dimensions? And a cherry brick on top! This is a seriously cool, subtly amusing, very well drawn and inked splash. Infernal congrats!

I think I smell a "One more Pig day" event down the line? ;)

Gorgeous page...and more evidence that some pages should be published only in Black and White!

Super fun piece with lots of cool references. The pig is my favorite of course. But I love the Superman version on the right (next to Moon Knight squatting down). And I really love the Disney nods, with Lion King at the top and what looks to be Maleficent holding the staff in the center.

This piece has a lot of what fans of the superhero art idiom might demand from an page in an important crossover book but McGuinness really makes this page his own with his superlative character design and cartooning. I'll be honest: his art has always been hit or miss for me but if he's producing work like this lately, I'm going to go with "hit."

I see Maleficent Mephisto, but where's Penis Mephisto? As you know, not a fan of Marvel getting into the pre-Crisis DC "multiverse" concept, but I do like FUN in my art and this does provide that! But again, where's Penis Mephisto???

It's the one in the center. It's supposed to be a cape draping down behind, but you can color it differently... and Strips #2 frontispiece is loose once more.

Ah, I saw that, but kept looking because I thought Fred meant that one of the Mephistos' entire bodies was drawn to resemble a penis.

Just really digging the inks throughout. That compared with the number of characters and how they're laid out...what a way to set the scene. Congrats!

Holy smokes! What a mind-blowing splash from Ed McGuinness and Mark Morales! A council of Mephistos? With Super-Mephisto and Piggy Mephisto and more? Yikes! Beautifully composed too. Love the way the eye is drawn from the Dog-Phisto down the cliff to the other Mephistos and then around the page like a spiral loop, ending in Malificent Mephisto. Gorgeous use of blacks throughout. What a stunning splash!
