DescriptionHere we have another fantastic Avengers page from the duo of Ed McGuinness and Mark Morales. The first panel offers great situational in space backgrounds with some fun ships and Kirby-like machinery on the space base. I really like that parts of the panel were left white/open to underline that indeed, we are at the very edge of that particular galaxy. Then of course, my/the main incentive, the full figure shot of Gladiator, one of those great characters I have loved since I laid my eyes on Byrne’s version (in X-Men or FF). He is supremely annoyed to be here, on top of his already very demanding nature, and it shows. I love that the Shi’ar soldier is basically shitting his pants in his crushing presence. He even looks more dangerous having his body hidden inside the shadows of his cloak. The background around them, the inside of the space base is also quite insane. No shortcut at all. This is Star Wars imperial destroyer level of space detail here :) The same great backgrounds can be appreciated in the last panel in which Gladiator is walking towards the problem. From a pure storytelling standpoint, what I really like is how his main figure overlaps all panels on the page to lead the reader’s eye from top to bottom. There are also a lot of diagonals to first showcase on the big figure (in case you missed it ^^) and also leading the eye from left to right and top to bottom. Lastly, the fact that Ed had the borders of the panels intersects with Gladiator’s cape is a cool design effect that looks even better in black & white. It's a truism at this point to mention how sharp those Morales’ inks are but that man can ink. Not an action splash but I don’t think Gladiator has looked more badass ;) Social/Sharing |

I really do love the undefined "line" that separates the positive and negative space to give off that "edge of the universe" feeling. So cool. Gladiator has indeed been cool ever since he appeared in the Byrne X-Men run. He's got a cool name and a mohawk, so it's pretty difficult to NOT be cool with those two things in your repertoire. The metallic interior of the ship has a really nice solidity to it as well, making you feel as if this is really a star cruiser that exists in real life. Morales' inks help to add to the believability by adding the necessary weight to everything with his splendid embellishing. Kudos on a great page!

Yup, awesome how imposing Guardian looks here, and set up with that awesome spacescape up top! And the inks just kill. Mark shines over Ed's pencils. Big congrats!

Mighty and majestic as McGuinness makes all his heroes look! The only think I would have liked more is if the mohawk was even more pronounced and wide, otherwise Gladiator is every bit the intimidating presence he is meant to be!

The cosmic armosphere of this page is so amazing!!! Nothing to add about Gladiator's full figure. An extraordinary addition to your collection. Huge congrats!

Beautiful, big, bold image of Gladiator! No panel can contain him... it wouldn't -dare-...! Just look at that expression! Definitely exudes the air of royalty and majesty that any depiction of Gladiator requires. Fantastic inking by Mark (as always), and I love the Kirby / Asgardian feel of the base in the first panel. A fun "bait and switch" in the sense that it's exactly the kind of page you might expect to open an issue of Avengers... just with Shi'ar environs in place of Thor and Asgard. :) REALLY beautiful page, F M! Congrats!

Great page with a really fun, under used and under appreciated character. From a purely visual standpoint, I always loved Gladiator.
