DescriptionThis is the Voodoo card drawn by Jason for the Wildstorm serie 2.Not only is that a great Pearson art in itself but it also is a great little piece of (the now defunct?) Wildstorm history. Like many, I dove right in the trading card craze during the 90s. I don’t know how many sets I own just for the original art produced for it by some of my favorite artists (which I wish would be printed somewhere at at least comic size). The Wildstorm sets were truly special in the sense they featured characters I loved and whose books I was reading. And the invited artists were “la crème de la crème” of the mainstream industry back then. Jason was a rising star and contributed to many sets back then. This one has always been special to me as I admired it from afar in another CAF member’s gallery. So when it became available last year, I knew I had to buy it (however high above market price it was). And I don’t regret it one bit. Jason’s art was more angular during the mid 90s and it worked extremely well. The girls he drew were skinnier safe for their breasts which were somewhat enhanced by this artistic choice. Which I absolutely don’t mind, strangely ^^ This is also Voodoo in her first (Jim Lee-designed) costume which I much prefer to the later ones however impractical it is in adventure/combat situations. I love her grin and the fact that she truly looks ethnic/exotic even in b&w. What I also love here is the symmetry of the piece. Voodoo herself is almost perfectly symmetric in her position. The “tapestry” behind her is also nicely symmetric and I have always responded favorably to symmetry in art. It gives a nice graphic design vibe to the piece as Jason expertly used the use of black & white to reinforce the feeling. Jason truly is an incredible artist and was from the get go. I find a lot of similarities in how Jason used b&w here/then and what Bryan Stelfreeze was doing during the same period. This must be the consequence of the shared Gaijin studio. For exemples of Stelfreeze, see his own section in my gallery. The piece looks small but despite the fact it was used as a trading card, it is 11 by 17. This is part 6 of 2019 CAF birthday party. Very nice Pearson piece! Stylistically clearly it’s him and I really dig the exactness of the inks. Congrats!
