DescriptionHere is a fun Pearson New Mutants cover tying in with Fear Itself. We have Mephisto crushing the kids in his hands. At last, a cover that is not an iconic pose but ties into what is happening in the book (remember those?). So we nearly got all the classic line up (Wolfsbane being a member of X-Factor at the time if memory serves) with Mirage, Magma, Cypher, Warlock, Sunspot and Canonball who does not appear in the book, not that I mind as his replacement would have been X-Man. So either editorial did not spot that or did not mind which is perfect for me. I like that Jason went for a cartoonier approach with this one as it quite clear that all of the bodies of the crushed NM could not fit inside Mephisto’s hands. Instead, Jason chose to concentrate on their facial expressions. The star of the show is obviously Mephisto here. His grinning face truly looks evil as he is immensely enjoying the pain he is inflicting here. The details I love is how Jason drew is ears like bat wings and how the bottom of his hairs is seemingly less delineated, like they are made of flames, a fitting detail for the devil. The pointy forearms and hands also a very devilish appropriate touch. Stylistically, we have the usual expert mix of techniques from Jason with solid and slick blacks, some deliberately open lines and delicate crosshatching. But the true fantastic choice he made is the intense light source coming from below, implicitly indicating that Mephisto is holding them above a fire, which would be consistent with the flaming hairs I mentioned. Finally, I find that the piece has a SW a new hope Death Star compactor feel to it with Mephisto’s arms being so horizontal ;) Jason is responsible for the colors which I don’t find 100% successful. But there seems to be two versions of the cover, one which is a muddy and bright red (for the direct market) and another which is more nuanced (for the newsstands). This is part 11 and the last one of my 2024 CAF birthday party. Happy birthday to me and thanks for following ;) Social/Sharing |

How did I guess you'd post a Jason Pearson piece on your birthday? Wow, I'm shocked! Anyway, it's a really nice one. Interesting design and composition and I like the Golden-esque stylization! Had he been able to be a regular monthly artist, I have no doubt I would've taken more notice of him and become a fan. Happy Birthday, man!

At some point in his career (the later part actually), he announced that he would to try his hand at the monthly exercise, preferably on an x-title, but fate (and editorial likely) decided otherwise.

Love seeing Jason's published Marvel work. Yet another sad reminder of the brilliant and dynamic artist we lost. I know it's bittersweet, but Happy Birthday sir! Thanks for sharing your celebration with the rest of us.

Really slick how Perason was able to compact all that ink in while still able to clearly show what was happening! Part cartoony and all adrenline inducing!

Wow! Fabulous New Mutants cover by Jason Pearson! Love this scene of Mephisto crushing the New Mutants in his fist! Great image of Mephisto's face grinning as he squeezes the team mercilessly! Pearson deftly captures the agony of Mirage and Cannonball and the others as they scream in pain! Humorous image of Warlock, upside down, eyes wide and tongue sticking out! Pearson was an amazing comic artist and here you can see how great he'd become and how much was lost by his early death. Anyway, congrats on a another fantastic pick-up!

Very creepy/cool! Is the title/lettering hand-drawn?

Mephisto is the star of every show. He would have it no other way! I love any Mephisto anything, and this is a very cool New Mutants cover. Mephisto just crushing people and collecting souls. Pearson clearly got the hellish memo. Devilish!
