DescriptionIt’s my birthday on CAF so you’d be right to assume I’ll post a new Pearson piece as it’s been customary every year for some time. So here it is, the cover to New Mutants volume 3 issue 32 from the fun Abnett & Laning run.I’ll be the first to recognize it’s not one of Jason’s bests and it seems a bit functional for him considering his vast talent (at everything) and that he’s produced exceptional covers. And yet, there is a lot to enjoy on this one. Jason chose the classic profile versus covers to show the two fighting sides here and it works wonders in terms of composition to work a lot of characters in (11!) without feeling cluttered (Crisis on Infinite Earths 5,7 or 9-take your pick-style). On the left, we have Mirage , Cypher, Magma, Sunspot, X-Man and Warlock who looks like he does not know what he is doing here (maybe echoing Jason’s feeling about this job?). Doug looks a bit weird as well. Roberto has always had a warlike nature that clearly can express itself here (I wish we’d see more of him given how cool he looks in b&w when powered). Dani clearly steals the show, in full Valkyrie mode and Nate looks like he is out of Braveheart. On the other side, we have the Draumar, i.e. Bonegrinder, Threadcutter, Breathtaker, Heartbreaker and Bloodletter (YES I had to look them up and YES I’m sure someone had a good laugh finding them names and suffixes ^^). The shark guy really looks terrifying here. He is so massive, he does not need a lot of protection. In terms of composition, Jason went with a classic “S” chape that works well in pulling the reader’s eye in the tension of the scene/the fight. But the main appeal for me subjectively is that it ties to one of my fav’ X-Men/New Mutants storyline that is Asgardian Wars. Those Art Adams and Paul smith two parters were and are still a high mark of that era (and my youth). And objectively, you can tell Jason had a blast with that thematic tie in in that he really went crazy with designing the Asgardian armours, gears and weapons on this one. Each armour and weapon is distinctive and clearly has seen previous battles. None is purely symmetrical which is something many artists would go for (for simplicity). Due to their gear, each character has a different weight on the ground, some sink in it, some don’t. Looks at the hilt of Nate’s sword with a little demon head, the way Jason drew that two handed axe that you can see in 3D, how the guy holds its two head fork or the snake helmet of the guy below him. Each character has its own personality here. It’s one of those covers that offer some storytelling bits and actually refer to what’s happening inside the book. A lost art these days, sadly. For example, why has Mirage got a broken sword? Great, if discreet, sense of movement with the capes and cloth flowing as well as Dani’s braids flying towards the enemy. As always with Jason, the techniques and inks he used are faultless: plain, gradients, crosshatching, negative space, it has it all. And it all boils down to an amazing storyteller infusing anything he worked on with tons of storytelling details for us to dissect and enjoy, consciously or not. I truly miss seeing more of his art, especially given the insane level of quality of the production he left behind. This is part 9 of my 2025 CAF birthday party, incidentally also my 20th year on CAF. Social/Sharing |

Well, this cover layout may indeed be often used, but it still seems to be a bit more interesting than usual, accomplished by not simply having the characters on each side standing right next to each other, single file. The choice of characters combined with Pearson's rendering style also serve to make it "a cut above the rest" to some degree. I really like it!

I didn’t realise Jason Pearson did this cover. Congrats on another addition of his to your collection. Cool mix of character with the D&D theme with plenty nuance that draws your attention.
