DescriptionThis piece is a re-creation, or re-interpretation if you will, of my #1 favorite panel from page 15 of Batman Son of the Demon GN by Jerry Bingham.Being a Batman collector since 1977, I have read a multitude of origin stories of Batman and how he came it be. From the very first origin in Detective Comics #33 by Bill Finger and Bob Kane all the way to the great retelling in Untold Legend of the Batman by Jim Aparo, and a myriad of others. In all these, Bruce Wayne is sitting late at night in his Wayne Manor study contemplating how to fulfill his childhood vow to his murdered parents by making war on crime. And then the classic line, "Criminals are superstitious, cowardly lot, so my disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts. I must be a creature of the night, Black, terrible...a...a..." And then the moment of truth when a large black bat flies in the open window, and Bruce declares..."A Bat! That's it! It's an omen...I shall become a Bat!" In every case, it was a large bat that flew in the open window. All save one! And that was in Batman Son of the Demon GN, published in 1987, written by Mike W. Barr and illustrated by Bingham. Here, as Barr and Bingham retell the origin, Bruce Wayne is dreaming of the night his parents were murdered by Joe Chill and then comes that fateful evening in his study. Barr writes, "...Denied a normal life of family and friends...Driven by a force greater than himself..." And then Bingham has a HUGE MAN-BAT climbing in the window to declare unto Bruce, "I have CHOSEN you, Bruce Wayne...You are mine, and you will become me...I am your true father...and you are my son." (Panel 1 of page 15 in SC edition). I asked Jerry whose idea was it to have a huge Man-Bat in the scene instead of just a normal bat, like all the previous origin stories. He said that he did not remember if it was the way Barr wrote it in the script, or if it was his idea. Nonetheless, I told him that it was brilliant! Like I said before, it was my favorite panel in the entire book, leaving a lasting and indelible impression upon my mind, which I have never forgotten. This page Jerry had already sold, and thus, was no longer available. So, the next best thing would be to have him re-create it for me. And so, here we are. Enjoy! Social/Sharing |
