Description

I don't run across many Clare Briggs editorial cartoons. In fact, this may be the first original I've seen of that genre. Dating from 1909, the first year of the Taft presidency, Briggs pictures Uncle Sam warming himself at an odd Taft stove, with Taft's campaign issues as firewood next to the stove. Some of those issues, such as Nicaragua, anti-trust and interstate commerce issues would actually be addressed. the piece is lightly titled in pencil, "Warming Up, But With an Eye on the Fuel". I haven't found an exact date of publication, but I imagine it was from January or February of 1909. Lovely drawing by one of the comic strip masters.

Handsome editorial cartoon! I've heard the name Clare Briggs before, but never seen his art. It's a spendid cartoon with a fine caricature and a interesting metaphoric image. Terrific pick-up!

This is a lovely piece of art but its clearly had a hard life. Are you going to get it restored?

Likely not, Peter. I did some work on the reverse with archival tape, but the cost of restoration would likely be double or triple the value of the piece.
