DescriptionComing full circle with this one, as it relates to the very firstoriginal art page I'd bought ! To me, this piece isn't just a "big one", but THE "big one" - the one page I've been searching for ever since I've started collecting original art ! As many of you may remember, my very first OA post was a page from BATMAN: SHADOW OF THE BAT #1; That page featured the actual very first "appearance" and mention of Mr. Zsasz (can be viewed within the same CAF folder). The thing is - he appeared caged in a box, with only a small window, from which you could only see his mouth... a great mystery buildup... but not much of an "appearance". Zsasz finally made his full appearance in the next issue, where he revealed his scarred body in a shocking scene which in my mind remains a "game changer" when it comes to Batman comics. (when I read it in the '90s it was this moment that transferred this tale and villain from a "standard" Batman story into the VERTIGO realms... You also couldn't get a more "full" appearance than this - with only a very well placed word balloon keeping this page code approved. I'm proud to add this to my collection. As always, I really enjoy your comments and thoughts (though I can only read your comments, not your thoughts...). I'll try to provide a MUCH better image once the art arrives. Social/Sharing |

That's just ridiculous, and I mean that in the best way :)

Dude, you are knocking them out of the part this year and it's only March. Congrats on this. Really nice.

You did it! The grail of your collection! I thought the cameo from SotB 1 was cool, but this takes the cake!!! Your 2012 has been outstanding!

Congratulations on picking up your grail piece, and what a piece it is...all that is best about Breyfogle's bat run is summed up in this wonderful page.

This piece really defines art. The creepiness from the details is skin crawling. What a well done piece.

I wouldn't call this a "grail" but more like a creepy page with even creepier dialogue! Such a great pickup since it has special meaning for you. Congratulations!

I'm glad that you were able to get your hands on the big one and the DC editors ensured that word balloons covered up the big one.

I actually remember seeing this in person. It was the guy's first piece of art he ever purchased and he had it framed at one point. Creeped me out too much and I thought it was too special to him to make an offer. Still has that timeless chilling effect.

Spectacular, I see how the page you wanted would compliment. :)

Historic piece of one of the most memorable (and lasting) of the "modern" Bat-villains. A true grail!

Congrats. Norm was another underappreciated talent that made his mark on the Batman mythos with creations like this.

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a stunning page! The first full appearance of Victor Zsasz! I always thought Zsasz was only interesting because he was the first Batman villain who didn't have a gimmick (Except the scar thing, which wasn't much of a gimmick). He didn't have a memorable backstory. He wasn't sympathetic in any way. Nevertheless, this introduction of him, drawn by the very talented Norm Breyfogle, is well done. Breyfogle did a lot of great work for DC and really knew how to make the most of a character. Great pick-up..
