DescriptionOne of the neat things about comics is that creators are always reinventing titles. In some cases, it’s for the good; in other cases, not so much. You can look back to the 30’s and 40’s for stories that created characters that still resonate today. But, given it’s an industry with so much creativity, it’s not surprising that there are always new stories of those older heroes and villains that have an outsized impact on the comic omniverse. A good example is the Dark Knight Returns. Although the book first came out in 1986, I would argue that it’s still having a rippling impact on the comics that we read today. In the last Heritage auction, there was a scene from the first of the four books that worked it’s magic on me. It was the final scene cementing the return of Batman with his public defeat of the Mutant Gang leader. I read these off of the rack, and remembered thinking that I didn’t know how this was going to turn out, given that the gang leader had been shown to be stronger, faster and tougher than Batman. It’s always difficult to create tension with long-standing characters, but that was the beauty of the Dark Knight Returns. You really didn’t know how it was going to end, and it seemed pretty clear that nothing was off the table. It was great how Miller set the tone, built up to the battle, and created real tension.

Agreed that the tension helped elevate this story to epic heights. I remember thinking that BATMAN seemed grossly overmatched by the Mutant and it seemed likely Batman could fail. Ron you have scored a climatic page from THE DKR classic.

The first time I read DKR I don't remember turning the pages after bruce fell into the cave. I had to go back and look at the artwork again because it happened between the panels for me. This is not ink on paper it's a piece of the magic carpet.

The cameo of the "Matt Murdock" lawyer representing the mutant leader is also a nice addition.

My Dark Knight "grail" would be a page from this fight sequence. The art and story in this section are my favorite in the entire series. Congrats on landing the exclamation mark to that chapter!!!

DKR was full of memorable moments which are now so classic and this fight sequence was just key. Another amazing pick up, Ron. What can I say about your keen eye that you haven't heard already?!
