Description

THE SMURFS
THE BLACK SMURFS (THE PURPLE SMURFS)
Indian ink on paper, plate 14. Dupuis Publishing, 1963. 17,2 x 12,6 in.

Estimation : 40 000 - 60 000 €

This is an exceptional extract from this story where, after many attempts, Papa Smurf manages to find an antidote from pollen of the tuberose, allowing the Black Smurfs to regain their original colour and character. This strip is marked by the unbearable drama, in the first two phases, which eventually leads to a happy ending in the final two, prior to ending with a much welcome dose of humour. The Smurf holding a poppy in the final panel would serve as inspiration to Pierre Culliford for design of the album cover.
Many questions were asked about why “black” was used by Peyo for the colour of the Smurfs’ skin in the album of the same name. Hanna- Barbera Studios would instead change this to purple, in “The Purple Smurfs”, for racial reasons, so that the Smurfs may not be identified or assimilated with the black community. The choice of the colour black was quite simply for graphical reasons. It was the only solution available to Peyo, who had never illustrated in colour, and so had only this choice in clearly and legibly marking the contrast between the Smurfs who were stung by the “Bzz” fly and the others. Without this, the illustrations in this adventure would not have had this immediate legibility contrasting the “white” of Smurfs with the black of the Black Smurfs.
