DescriptionOur Army at War #16 (DC Comics, November 1953), Page #15 (Atom-Age)which is actually page #5 of the 6-page story "Battle of the Bugles“. This "semi-splash" action page depicts the US Calvary Bugler Dave Pickett, shown full-figure in panel one, "sounding the charge" while bullets ricochet at his feet. In panel four, our hero takes a bullet to the arm. A very nice example of "Atom-Age Large-Art“, featuring some of the earliest work by the prolific art team of Ross Andru (pencils) and Mike Esposito (inks). Andru's first professional comic book work was for the Tarzan newspaper strip in 1948. In the 1950s and early 1960s Andru worked primarily on DC's war comics; All American Men of War (1953–1964), GI Combat (1957), Our Army At War (1953), Our Fighting Forces (1955) and Star Spangled War Stories (1954–1966). In the late 1950s he was assigned to more superhero work; Rip Hunter, Time Master (1961), The Flash (1967), and "Sea Devils". Andru co-created the Metal Men in Showcase #37 (March/April 1962). In 1958 he began a nine-year run on Wonder Woman lasting until 1967. In the early 1970s, Andru left DC for Marvel Comics. Initially he did short runs on such titles as Marvel Feature in 1971–1972, where he launched the Defenders; and Marvel Team-Up in 1972, where he first drew Spider-Man. In 1973, he began his five-year stint as regular penciler on Amazing Spider-Man, which at that point was Marvel's highest-selling monthly comic. Social/Sharing |
