DescriptionI have been itching to put this cover homage up for quite some time as it is one of my all-time Re-Legion favorites. But since I wanted to keep the posts sequential, I had to be patient. It is true, however, good things come to those who wait. Russ Payne has done amazing work for me but this one is special and challenged him .As you can see, Russ rose to the occasion. I don't usually buy variant covers . I consider them to be simply a money-racket and I am more interested in the comics contents not in the cover but but since I am old enough to remember the Avengers cover that Wolverine is popping out of, this one caught my eye. When I saw it on the shelf at my comic book store ( Past Present Future Comics in West Palm Beach for the record ). I knew I wanted to add it into the Re-Legion series but I had no idea how challenging it would be. I usually leave the main image as a black & white piece but I feel that this one only really comes into its own when viewed in glorious technicolor. MC Wyman did a lovely job with the base image ( it has a Swan feel about it ) and then Russ went to work. I think that it is a clever & powerful commission that connects the Star Boy of Kitson era Legion back to the Silver Age and Adventure Comics. Enjoy Aidan Social/Sharing |

I love this!! The styles of the different eras mesh perfectly, and the new masthead bleed through the old really tops it off!

Every "rip and tear" was strategically placed for maximum effect. Russ is not only talented, he has the patient of a saint !

Magnificent. One of my favorites. Wyman was a good one to capture Curt's Legion and the mixing of logos and Star Boy variants is very well done. Congratulations on another fun piece.

I'm even more impressed with this commission after reading your description.
I did not realize at first that MC had channeled Curt Swan. I thought you had simply inserted this version of Star Boy on a stat of the cover. As always a superb commission by MC.
Interesting to see this Avengers cover again after so many decades. This was one of John Buscema's earliest Avengers efforts and I thought it lacked the fluidity that his later work had. If John was still alive it might be fun to commission him and ask him to reinterpret his own much earlier effort...just a thought, that will never, sadly happen.

No "stats" here. We did this ( at least partially )the old-fashioned way. Wyman is talented. I loved the John Buscema run on the Avengers. He was only getting warmed up when he did this cover but it was pure nostalgia that drew me into this commission.

Man, this one looks amazing. Both MC and Russell went out of their way to make it look fantastic. I love the effects used on the underlying image to make it look older and a little blurry.

I generally feel the same way as you about variants, but as with all things Re-Legion, I love this one.
