DescriptionCaptain America Vol 1 #143November, 1971 "Power to the People" Writer: Gary Friedrich Art:John Romita Sr. Letterer: Sam Rosen There is little debate about the significance of John Romita Sr. contribution to the look of Marvel comics, Super Hero soap opera's of the 60's, 70's and beyond. Yet I've always been especially partial to his work done in the romance genre. The search for a stellar Romita Sr. romance page lead me right to the pages of Cap 143. A beautiful girl interacting with a dashing boy, clear uncluttered staging and storytelling that reads from across the room, with that sumptuous line work make for (in my humble opinion) an incredible piece. The page is clean and bright with only light use of white as corrections, applied in a manner that takes serious study to see. Obviously the work of a master craftsman taking great care in creating this magnificent art. Special thanks to Glen Brunswick for sending this one my way! Social/Sharing |

It's funny how in-costume action pages dominate and push prices in our hobby, when killer portraiture "character" pages like this one are often so much cooler! Major congrats!

Major congrats! Thanks, I agree of course! My goal was to get a top-flight Romita romance page. In that I succeeded. Sam Wilson and Leila Taylor could have been any random characters from any book. It was the magic Mr. Romita put on the page that mattered!

Very nice Frank! I loved Romita's Capt.A! Heck his everything! You should ask John to sign it. If you'd like his info, let me know. Congrads on this beautiful page!

Wow! Love all this "Black Power" meets "Uncle Tom, male chauvinist" dialogue. Somebody was watching a lot of Blacksploitation flicks I think. Cool page!

There is such charm, in these pages, not only because of the beautiful art, but because, at that time, comics, perhaps as much as if not more than any other media, captured the essence of the era. Today's comics seem content to serve as merely alternative fantasy escapes, and, in that limited role, may never achieve the same relevance as these little windows into yesteryear. Congratulations on quite the groovy acquisition!

BEAUTIFUL page! CLASSIC Romita, and a cool example that incorporates the super-hero and romance elements, showing the Falcon (as Sam) with his sweet gal. Hot stuff!

"Uncle Tom!" "Male Chauvinist!" "People's Militia Rally!" Not only do the '70s seem like another time now, but also like another world. This page is completely gorgeous! No one, but no one was drawing pretty girls as often and on a monthly basis in comics of this decade than John Romita, Senior. Not that you necessarily needed another comment on this page (43 comments, whew!, and well deserved!)...

The dialogue is so awfully dated its hilarious. 70s writing is funnier than 90s, 80s, 60s or even 50s for some reason. The art however retains its power.

Romita drawn and Romita inked. You can't go much better than that. Romita was definitely one of the better artists at Marvel - he had a lot of realism in his work, and enough of the comic book to make it perfect for the medium. John could draw Black people very well, with the look of some of the characters from the Black action films of the time. Second best at drawing attractive women behind John Buscema. And a hell of an art director as well.
