DescriptionBill Sienkiewicz’s run on the New Mutants left an indelible impression on me as a thirteen year-old only a year and a half into a comic title that still stands the test of time as one of my favorites. I can distinctly recall picking up New Mutants #18 and wondering what had happened to the art and what on hell was going on in those densely packed pages. I quickly got past my natural aversion to any change and I was fascinated by the art, anxious to decipher each panel and page and move on to the next. Looking back, I can appreciate that Sienkiewicz brought incredible depth, complexity and sophistication to the title as he flexed his creative muscles and elevated his style to a whole new level as compared to his prior work on Moon Knight. While the team encountered graver dangers and grimmer realities than ever before during his tenure on the book, Sienkiewicz never lost sight of the fact that the New Mutants was a team comprised of teenagers. The energy and enthusiasm that Sienkiewicz brought out in the characters is a hallmark of his work on the title and an amazing feat given the fairly dark story lines penned by Chris Claremont. New Mutants #21 stands out in my mind as an issue that perfectly balances the darkness and light that characterized the series. With Dani Moonstar recovering from her near-mortal injuries suffered while defeating the Demon Bear, Claremont gave the team an issue off to decompress and for the girls to host a Slumber Party! But I digress. I’ll have to do an in-depth review of New Mutants #21 at The Marvel Project because this post is intended for the all-important topic of the cover art to this issue. This cover embodies everything that I love about the New Mutants and about Bill Sienkiewicz’s art circa 1984. Not just energy and enthusiasm, but pure joy resonating from the characters that are practically leaping off the cover. It’s like that scene in the first Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film when he swings through the city in costume for the first time. No angst. No guilt. No remorse. Just the pure joy of that incredible moment. Woo Hoo!!! The cover art to New Mutants #21 always stuck in my mind as the embodiment of what I loved about the team. One day when I was exploring the galleries on ComicArtFans.com, I was thrilled to find the cover art to New Mutants #21 in the collection of Ferran Delgado. I eventually worked up the nerve to email him and inquire about whether he’d be willing to sell the art, but he politely declined, noting that it would probably be the last piece in his collection that he would ever sell. Almost a year later, I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from Ferran offering to sell the cover. I agreed without hesitation and booked myself on a flight to Madrid the following week so that I could pick the piece up in person. It was really fantastic to meet a fellow fan who is passionate about all of the same 1980s titles that constitute my personal “Golden Age” of comics. I am thrilled to finally be the owner of what I consider to be a true “Grail” piece of comic art. In my mind, a Grail is not just art that is objectively acknowledged as great, significant or simply very expensive. No, it is a piece of art that has true personal significance. The cover art to New Mutants #21 is all of that to me. My thanks go out to Ferran Delgado for being willing to part with his grail and to Bill Sienkiewicz for his extraordinary run on the New Mutants and enduring body of work that has now dazzled at least three generations of fans. Click here to view a high-resolution scan of the 13 ¼” x 19 ½’ painted art. It's really amazing in person! Social/Sharing |

My young brain wasn't able to handle the change to Sienkiewicz on this title as well as yours was. But once it hit me, it hit me hard. Great cover from one of the most important runs of one of comics' most influential artists.

Fantastic. Bill's New Mutants work was game changing in comics and they have never been the same since. I love this cover. Perhaps we can persuade you to give us a bigger scan and perhaps some detail images in your additional images slots. How big is this piece?

How big is this piece? The piece if big by comic art standards at 13 ¼” x 19 ½’ in total size. It's on heavy Number 80 Bainbridge Board and I was pleasantly surprised to find Bill's name, address and phone number printed on the back. Presumably he wanted to make sure he got his art back from Marvel. There's a link above to a larger version of the art and feel free to message me if you'd like a high-resolution scan.

Wow, ok I'm in shock, first I'm always in shock when I see this cover because of the perfection of the composition - always say that Sienkiewicz's work in this period just stood out on the racks, apart from everyone else in the best possible way. I'm really in shock that Ferran parted with this one, but it looks to have gone to a good home.

Congratulations on acquiring a cover that is so significant to you as a fan! It's true that every time a comic art collector acquires a long sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets his wings.

Not to denigrate the greatness of the other covers he did, but the covers to NM #19 & 21 are the two that, when I close my eyes and think of Sienkiewicz's run on this title, come to mind first (that poster he did is a great and memorable image as well, but it isn't a cover).

I'm happy that it got a great home! It was sad to have to part with it, but other urgent matters come first than a hobby. At least I hope it don't reach the market ever, it'd be awfull to see how much it might fetch nowadays, much more of what you paid for it. Best wishes, Henry!
