DescriptionIn the light about the (slight) controversy of Quitely’s high price of a recent cover, I thought I’d post this second page I own from that seminal book by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. In this one, the layout is the most interesting part as they are used to close in on a particular scene, only using horizontal panels. In the first one, Ultraman of the Crime Syndicate is above ground in the team flying fortress or evil satellite, focusing on a conversation happening on the ground down below. Like an evil god looking at his subjects. Then, we slowly begin to zoom in on Earth 2’s equivalent of the White house that is apparently a Black house in a fun establishing shot. In the third panel, we are now inside the oval office as Johnny Quick and Power Ring are being bribed off by the president (this was probably considered transgressive back in 2000 but sadly seems too close for comfort these days). You’ll notice that J.Q. is shooting that juice up his arm while Power Ring is keeping the security guards at bay (toying with them?) with a nasty two heads monster ring construct. Yes, these are villains indeed. In the last panel, it’s back to normal on that nasty version of an earth. The fun part in this one is the over confidence of the two villains opposed to the obvious discomfort they cause to president’s collaborator and guards. I also like how Quitely drew the dissipating energy of the ring construct, indicating that’s they don’t appear and disappear on the spot as if generated by an on/off button. As always, Quitely’s super clean and super clear art shines in its execution and sense of detail. A seemingly quiet page that I’ve owned for years and which you will understand why I picked it, later on (tease!). Social/Sharing |

My favorite period of Quitely art because he was, I believe, inking his own pencils.

Are we sure this is Earth 2? Looks very this timeline... Lovely page.

Really nice page, just wish there was a better scan/pic so we can appreciate it better! It's kinda dark and blurry ;-)
Despite my personal feelings on Quitely's "hype", this is my favorite of his work/era where his stuff is actually inked by him (and inked in general). Congrats! And now to ponder what that tease means...

Quitely inking his own work always looks great. I don't how he does it, but I love the blur effect he created, to make the page look as if it was a bad photo taken by the person who sold the page to you. So cool. Poor Kavi doesn't realize it's just a brilliant artisitic technique!

Do you think it may actually be all drawn digitally then inked over for 30 minutes in order to sell it as OA to fans like some do these days?
(no offense meant to Mr Quitely. My pic is crap whereas his art certainly is not)

Well as you know, I'm a neophyte where art is concerned, so I have no idea. But wow, what an incredibly intriguing possibility you've just brought up! But wouldn't that make the art even MORE rare? Because then you would only have half of the original art, so the less of something there exists, the rarer it is and therefore the more prized and valuable!

It's Quitely's big minastream DC breakout stories with the prestige format book. It hit when JLA was a top title which gave this maximum exposure. We got to see what he could do with the superhero genre and changed the trajectory of his career.

Gorgeous page! Any scan of this page is better than no scan, but a less blurry scan would be greatly appreciated.

The next Quitely controversy: #ScanGate. Loved Earth 2 and Quitely inking himsef is a big reason why. Always felt like something was lost in translation anytime anyone else inked him. This page is a great reminder of his pure, unfiltered art. Thanks for sharing!
