Description

Here's a lovely Chaykin grail if ever I saw one. This is the cover to the 1978 signed, limited edition portfolio issued by Schanes & Schanes.

Cody Starbuck is a fictional space pirate created by Howard Chaykin, who first appeared in Star Reach magazine issue #1, and also appeared in various issues of Heavy Metal Magazine.

After Chaykin penciled Starbuck in the early 70's, he left his creation to work on Star Wars for Marvel Comics. He returned to Starbuck in 1978 with Star*Reach and published Cody Starbuck #1. The art and action was raw and was labelled with an "Adults Only" tag. Schanes & Schanes published this companion portfolio.

This piece is painted on Bainbridge board and is huge! There is lots of detail and texture. I've also posted additional images of the published cover and plates.

I'm a huge fan of Chaykin's work in the 70's. But to have a cover from that era, and with his original stylings, is a grail!
