DescriptionAlthough just a small part of the Dark Phoenix saga, it was the Hellfire Club rampage that cemented Wolverine's place in the pantheon on modern superheroes.Wolverine was always cool, but he was written as a brash character whose impulsive rush to battle often slowed down the team. Not this time, though. Claremont gives Wolverine a hunter's intellect, allowing him to pick off his opponents as he works his way up to a rematch with Harry Leland. And what a one-sided match it is! By attacking his foe from above, Wolverine is able to use his opponent's powers against him. The result is a (literally) crushing defeat for Leland. And the badass Wolverine era officially begins. Another great piece of work by the team of Byrne and Austin. But the real star here is Chris Claremont, who changed Wolverine and the X-Men forever on this very page. Social/Sharing |

Dan, I whole-heartedly agree with your evaluation/ description of this page. This issue...nay, this very page is what brought Wolverine to the iconic status he has today! Congratulations on a superb aquisition.

I disagree. I see Uncanny X-Men #133 ("Wolverine Alone") as the iconic Wolverine issue from the Byrne/Austin run. Wolverine gutting the Hellfire Club stooges. Still, there's no denying that this page is a fantastic example from the run. Congratulations.

Just to clarify things, when I described the Hellfire Club rampage, I was referring to the events of both issues 133 & 134. This page being the culmination of Wolverine's special part in the story.

I thought this was the perfect XM Byrne page for me and I tried hard, but it was not meant to be. Great choice: this page has everything, great action, storytelling, perfect inking, panel composition, everything! Well done!
