DescriptionI was perusing my art, looking for a suitable piece for my final post of 2024, and this piece screamed "Me! Pick me!"ULotB is a huge sentimental favorite of mine. The 3 issue limited series served as a great primer to the Batman family, supplying origins and background to the main characters. But only issue #1 focused on Batman and was penciled by John Byrne. This page, featuring Bats confronting his parents' killer, is one of the best in the book! While this isn't the first piece of Byrne art to enter my collection, it is the first one that I was able to obtain from the artist himself! Through a fortunate series of events, I found myself in John Byrne's drawing room earlier this year. His longtime rep, Jim Warden, thought that some of his framed art might contain multiple pieces. After getting permission, Jim opened some frames and found this page! I was gobsmacked, as Byrne famously sold all of his 80s art decades ago. But somehow he still had this. I am terribly grateful that Mr Byrne allowed me to take it home! Check out the (grainy) attached pic of the great artist and the lucky collector Social/Sharing |

Fantastic page Dan! Pretty incredible that it was hidden in a frame along with other pieces. Major score

The page is great but what can ever be better than meeting Byrne at his studio!

I want to wander around in that room and see everything he has on the walls. A great background story to a fine piece.

Oh yeah! Now that's a terrific Batman page by the great John Byrne! Love how the scene builds with Batman initially only show from a distance and as a shadow and only in the bottom panel do we finally see Batman up close and personal--AND HE'S TAKING OFF HIS MASK! It's a startling moment and it's meant to be. It's the kind of moment that John Byrne has been creating in comics for as long as he's been drawing. And how cool that you got to buy it directly from JP himself. That must have been a thrill. One of the greatest comic artists of all time and he's selling you a piece that was on his wall (Even if it was behind another piece). Phenomenal! Serious congratulations.

Stunning piece of Byrne Batman art and an even better story behind it! (Literally) So many great things all happening here--going to see JB at his home, finding the long lost piece of art and getting to talke it home with you! And knowing you will be staring at this piece for many years to come! Congratulations!

Clearly there needs to be a new category in the annual Best Of polling - Best Acquisition Story - but we'd only need one entry for 2024. What a memorable acquisition in all ways!

Big congrats, Dan! I remember this page distinctly when first reading the book...so awesome to see the page here. And doubly good that it came from Mr. Byrne himself. Suh-weet, indeed. Congrats!

What a find. As cool as the art is (especially that last panel), the story of how you got it is even cooler. Huge congrats!
