DescriptionDon Rosa (born in 1951)Page 9 of the Chapter 2 of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck: The Master of the Mississippi. The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck (Lo$) relates the life of the richest duck in the world, from earning his first dime in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1877, up to his meeting with his nephews in Duckburg, Calisota, in 1947 as told by Carl Barks in the story Christmas on Bear Mountain in the character’s first appearance. Carl Barks gave many glimpses into Scrooge’s past, but these references had never been put together into a coherent story until Don Rosa came along. In this saga divided into 12 chapters -with several additional chapters and stories added later- Don Rosa builds a life story of the young Scrooge using the various pieces of information given by Carl Barks in his comics as a foundation. The second chapter of Lo$ is placed in 1880 near Louisville, when the young Scrooge and Ratchet Gearloose (grandfather of Gyro) work with Angus “Pothole” McDuck, captain of a steamboat on the Mississippi river. The page contains a reference to Mark Twain (See additional images for the published page with dialogue), which is an expression used by steamboat pilots on the Mississippi river. The second mark on the line that measured depth meant twelve feet, which was considered a safe depth for the steamboat. Unfamiliar with the term, Ratchet Gearloose confuses the expression with the name of an author who’s their contemporary. This isn’t a coincidence: The author, whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, chose the pen name Mark Twain as a reference to the time he spent as a Mississippi steamboat pilot during his youth. This joke, as well as the mention of Lily Langtry in the last case, were unfortunately removed in most foreign translations (at least in French and Italian as shown in the additional images), due to the difficulty of translating puns. The additional images show the published page in some editions of interest to me, or to which I had easy access. Social/Sharing |
