DescriptionAbout ten years ago my buddy Todd came into work one Monday morning. He said to me, "hey, you're into comics. Have you ever heard of some guy name Bernie Wright-something?" "Bernie WRIGHTSON?" "yeah, yeah, that was it. I was at this dinner event and this guy just starts handing out these comics he said he drew." "You had dinner with Bernie Wrightson?!" "Yeah, he was there. Why?" "Why? He's a god. You dined with a god." "Really?" This was the start of a friendship he made with Bernie and Liz Wrightson over the years. A friendship I was sooooo envious of! He tried on numerous occasions to see if Bernie would do a commission for me (my standing offer was "name your price and draw DD in any way you want. Zero editorial input from me.") but Bernie had been burned by commissions in the past and never wanted to do one again. I left IMAX in 2011 and I've kept in contact with Todd off and on, mostly through Facebook. Recently I attended a movie premiere (my friend and business partner Dennis Bartok just directed his first film, NAILS). Todd saw that I was going to be there, so after the show he found me in the lobby, handed me an envelope and said "I got these from Liz for you." They were Bernie's pencils. The last he had been drawing with. He said he knew how much I loved his work and was sorry he could never get Bernie to agree to a drawing and knew I'd appreciate them. Wow. I almost cried right there in the lobby. I knew I had to take care of them, so I picked a favorite piece and had them framed with it. Just got it back this afternoon. Social/Sharing |

I nearly cried there in the lobby when he handed them to me and explained what they were.
