Description

This is the kind of art I got into the hobby to collect, art that was touched by the hands of one of my art gods. Or by the hands of two of them, as in this case!

Have I really been collecting comic art for almost two decades without acquiring a darned thing by Jack Kirby? Staggeringly, yes. It's embarrassing to think about, let alone acknowledge. Jack "King" Kirby was the first artist whose work I learned to recognize by style. Not to downplay the achievements of Stan Lee whatsoever, but it was the brilliance and fecund creativity of The King that almost singlehandedly lit the torch that fired and excited the imaginations of thousands of comic-collecting kids like me in the '60s. Jack gave us so many happy childhood memories!

This example of Kirby art predates the magical Marvel stuff by a mere handful of years, or by only a decade, if one chooses to regard 1969 as the apex of Jack Kirby's drawing for Martin Goodman, as some of us do. It's sobering to contemplate that when this ran in newspapers, I was just a few years shy of being spermatozoon. :-)

This lovely daily is further distinguished by exquisite inking by my all-time favorite comic artist, the legendary Wally Wood. Thank you, Hans Kosenkranius, for being so terrific to work with, and for making it possible for me to own this.

The single jarring note to this piece for me is the questionable emphasis on exclusively bold lettering in the second balloon. I wonder why this artistic choice was made and deemed necessary. It doesn't seem to make any storytelling sense, and it's distracting.

This one's beautiful. I'm in the same position you were in before you got this Kirby/Wood. After all my years of collecting I've haven't anything from either of them. A Sky Masters is what I've been considering to remedy that. But nothing yet. I congratulate you on this AMAZING art.

Jack Kirby! Wally Wood! Mayday Shannon! What more could you want? Great stuff... I wish there were a few more years of these!

I particularly enjoy the strips with Mayday and I bought the first of my two for that very reason. Wood, of course, was justly famous for the beautiful women he drew and though Kirby wasn't a slouch at drawing women, certain inkers could make them look beautiful or some made them simply pedestrian. Wood was definitely in the former category. Nice example of a great pairing.

I have always liked Sky Masters and Challengers of the Unknown by Kirby and Wood a lot. This strip is a perfect example of why I think that that Wood was one of the best Kirby inkers!
