Description

I usually collect for the quality of art over nostalgia, but this piece hit both for me. I first saw it in one of the digest-sized reprints DC put out in the 1980s and was awestruck by the realism. As much as any other image, this is the one that made me a Russ Heath fan.

This is likely Heath's most famous image from his prime run on Sgt Rock. He wrote, drew, and inked the entire story. I had been looking for this for years, the rumor was that when he let his art go he held onto this story, and I had pretty much given up on it being available. You can imagine my surprise when I saw it pop up in the Heritage preview.

From Russ himself:
"I did one called "Easy's first Tiger." I had a big splash page of this Tiger tank and when they opened that up, when the package came in, I remember Wolfman, he opened the package and he said, "Oh, my God!" And he ran down the hall to show all the guys and they'd sit and say, "What has that crazy bastard Heath done now?"

I've read and admired a load of Heath's Haunted Tank and thus have become a big fan of Heath's tank art. Huge congrats this piece is stunning!!!
