Description

I already was the proud owner of an Eisner's original work (the Spirit preliminary drawing on display in this same Gallery Room), but now I'm very happy to add a nice example from one of his most famous and most self-referential Graphic Novels!
As you can notice by looking at the additional image, some significant changes were made in the final/published version. But this fact doesn't detract from the beauty and the freshness of this preliminary study, which in my opinion is a little gem in and of itself.
Also, it's very interesting to see how the master worked on this piece: the bottom scene only was drawn directly on the sheet (along with the second balloon), while the upper ones were both drawn separately then cut out and pasted onto it.

You got the better work here! The published page smacks of an editor lacking the artists vision, imo. The layout, inking and visual storytelling are masterful. I love pages showing process and choices, and this is a hum-dinger. Very nice! Big congrats!

It seems to me the Eisner preliminary pencil pages are more exciting liked the final inked ones. Simply great to look at!

Really nice, historically significant page from Eisner! Love how dark he went with these pencils and the storytelling is of course terrific
