DescriptionCriminal: Last of the Innocent #3 (16x20)Criminal was where it all began for me with Brubaker & Phillips and it still holds a special place amongst their growing body of work. The series delivered over and over and not a single issue in this saga disappointed. The work that started with "Bad Night" had a different tone and personal nature to it and is a fantastic character study that was inspired by the circumstances around Brubaker's life at the time. It's hard to pick a favorite, but "Last of the Innocent" certainly stands out for me as the pinnacle of work in this series for a number of reasons. Riley Richards is a fascinating character - the epitome of the all-American boy that ends up murdering his wife in cold blood, who you still can't help rooting for and not knowing why. The art for this series is unique in that Phillips successfully juggles Archie-style carefree, cheerful flashbacks with art that reflects Riley's gritty, scratchy and dark present-day tale. Sean Phillips' covers to this particular series were phenomenal. Every single one is pitch-perfect for the story as it starts to unravel but this specific piece (#3) really resonated with me. The great noir-feel to all the Criminal work is captured perfectly here and the warm tones and striking lighting in the scene complement Riley Richards perfectly. The eyes in the Miranda poster menacingly looking over Riley in the background as he lights his cigarette (pre-occupied in his space) is genius. This story is eventually about a man who lives in the past, takes no responsibility for his decisions, and despite his affections is totally hollow inside -- this cover says it all. This piece if ridiculous. Great score! Make me want to buy a painted Phillips cover. I'm pretty jealous!

I'm a big fan of Phillips art, and the Criminal series in particular. Stunning cover, and well written comment.
