DescriptionI’ve been hankering for a Redondo Dredd story since the days of Return to Armageddon.IDW answered that craving, with Jesus illustrating the sixth part of IDW’s ongoing Dredd storyline. I’ve not read the previous five parts and the “story so far” intro wasn’t that helpful and I ended up reading it as an In medias res one-shot, which made the story a serviceable satire of certain men’s reaction to both feminism and the modern world, in particular to how those reactions manifest online — a sad little man, a keyboard warrior, armed with nothing but an overblown sense of entitlement, no sense of perspective and a 24/7 supply of bile to spew on twitter and Facebook. The story, whatever its faults, does not lack ambition. Jesus’ art is like Christmas morning, page after page after page after page. The script required Dredd to be decked out in the same uniform as he appeared in prog 2. Perhaps the only quibble about the art would be the colour of the knee pads, which are green rather than yellow, as they were depicted in the early progs. But the colour of knee pads is a controversial issue, perhaps second only the the spines on the Case Files not lining up… Anyway, Dredd finds himself, with no memory, in a misogynistic 1950s (because if only we could turn the clock back to that panacea...) fantasy world created by a man who is a “god amongst men” in his own head, railing against the dying of the light of his own sense of purpose and blaming women for running Mega City One into the ground: “Hershey, Anderson— women destroy everything.” How, exactly, it was ruined isn’t set out - presumably something IDW covered earlier. Anderson — fantastic cheekbones equipped as standard on a Redondo heroine -- is Dread’s virtual wife, cooking and mothering and wearing negligees as the VR world requires, and assisting Dredd to clear his head. Violence, unpleasantness and Scooby Doo references ensue. The art is wonderful and the writing certainly only makes complete sense if you’ve read the first 5 parts, which I’ve not. There's an inch missing of the right hand side - lazy scanning... Social/Sharing |

Not a fan of the IDW line of Judge Dredd comics. And tellingly they are at their best when they employ the talents of the established 2000ad writers and artists. Jesus Redondo is a class act in whatever he does, and this is a lovely commission.
