Description"AT LAST! DARKSEID BATTLES THE SUPER POWERS (i.e. the Justice League) AND THE PRIZE IS EARTH!"Thanks to Jim Warden, for my first Jack Kirby (Twice-up) art page! I love the sequential art of this page, from the dynamic perspective in the first panel, and the Kirby-tec of the moon base, to Darkseid towering victorious over the Flash's unconscious and steaming body (with a hint of Krackle). There are even echo's of Kirby's animation career in the progression of panels. In 1986, after one year and 11 issues of Jack Kirby plotted and/or illustrated Super Powers comics - we FINALLY get a faceoff between the Justice League and Darkseid (one of Kirby's great creations). This mini series begins with Darkseid escaping Apokolips after the events of the “The Hunger Dogs” graphic novel. Following his retreat to a moon base, Darkseid sets his sights on dominating Earth. As DC readers know Darkseid has super human powers, but prefers to orchestrate his villainy behind the scenes. In this page, from Kirby's last full comic book, we have a rare scene of Fourth World villains Darkseid and DeSaad displaying their power and personally defeating a hero with Omega Effect beams. The preceeding page shows Darkseid's hologram crushing our heroes, and is followed by the team's imprisonment. Social/Sharing |

Such a great piece! I love the way Kirby composed Flash's posture to indicate super speed. Plus the panel layout is revolutionary with the circles instead of a standard grid. Great addition to a great collection!

Very big congratulations, Anthony! I'm a fan of the New Gods, as well, so I can certainly appreciate how cool it must be to have this page.

TWICE SIZE KIRBY PENCILS - Now that is mighty impressive! Throw in DC's baddest villain and you really have an instant classic! Jim Warden is one of the nicest guys in the biz with one of the BEST collections around. Great piece, Anthony.

Wow Anthony! Comparing the inked versus the pencils, you can see the inker Greg Theakson made some significant creative decisions. Thanks for posting your pencils from my page!!! It's awesome to be able to compare the two. For everyone else, you can see the final inks of this fantastic piece here: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=1089555&GSub=135956

Despite this being from the twilight of Kirby's career, it makes me wonder what DC's Silver Age might have looked like had it not been for that idiot editor who pretty much blackballed Kirby at DC over a dispute over the Sky Masters of the Space Force strip. Also, the layout using the circles is really interesting, especially if one is used to Kirby's usual six-panel grid style.
