DescriptionGil Kane was one of the few Silver Age luminaries I had the pleasure to meet. It was at a Chicago comic con, where he spoke on the progression of art from the Golden Age of comics onward. Unfortunately, it appeared obvious, when he let his guard down somewhat, that he was battling some health issue -- likely the one that would soon thereafter take his life.Kane was an engaging speaker, and a polite and super-intelligent guy. Except maybe in one respect: he thought that he was his own "best inker." And as much as I love Gil Kane's art, that definitively is not the case. At some point near the middle/end of the 1960s -- around the time he was bouncing between DC and Marvel -- Kane began to ink more of his work, and also began to ink his pencils in more of a (for lack of a better word) "sloppy" fashion. Sometime thereafter he then began using markers to ink much of his art, which further lowered the quality of his finished product. Kane certainly had many talented inkers lend a pen and brush to his sweet pencils, among them greats like Murphy Anderson, Wally Wood, John Romita, Joe Sinnott and Bill Everett. 1997, the year that the Distant Fires graphic novel was produced, was during Kane's "marker period," but DC smartly assigned the talented Kevin Nowlan to ink Kane's pencils on that book. And the result was indeed fantastic. This page by Kane and Nowlan features the cool large (imaginary) figures of Lois, Perry and Jimmy, along with a very nice close-up of a bearded Clark -- and Lex Luthor to boot. Comic art at its very best. Social/Sharing |

Agreed... Nowlan over Kane looks great! I'd never heard of this book before.

Ever since I got my splash in 2004, I've been looking for a copy but have never even SEEN one! Anyway, this is a great page. I absolutely agree with everything you wrote about Kane and Nowlan.

This is a killer combo. Wish they would have teamed up more often.
