DescriptionWhen Western terminated their contract with Dell in 1962 and started publishing their own comic books under the Gold Key imprint, they had a few peculiar layout ideas. Here is a typical example of early Gold Key covers: The cover is divided in three parts, and each part is an illustration of an inside story. The upper left part illustrates the leading story in the issue, Carl Barks´ ten-pager "Spare that Hair". This illustration was also used as back cover. The two other stories featured on the cover were illustrated by Strobl and Paul Murry, respectively, but all three cover illustrations are by Strobl. Mayer as inker is an educated guess. WDC 272 was published in 1963. Since nearly all the Dell/Western original artwork was destroyed at the printing plant, there are just a few surviving WDC original covers older than this one.Social/Sharing |
