DescriptionAs an emo college kid in the early 90s, I was absolutely obsessed with anything Neil Gaiman, largely because of his work on Sandman. I’m sure I’m not alone in admitting that I had a huge crush on Morpheus' big sis after reading issue 8, so much so that I went out and got a ring of Ankhs tattooed around my arm at some point after graduating. As conceived by Gaiman, the character of Death was a masterclass on how to turn readers’ expectations on their heads. Here on the one hand was a figure who was burdened with the macabre and thankless task of shepherding the dead to the afterlife, while on the other hand being portrayed not as a grim reaper, but instead as a vibrant young woman who reveled in the everyday joys of life. This juxtaposition was perfectly encapsulated in Sandman 8 and in the first Death mini series, which also happened to be my introduction to the art of Chris Bachalo (who to this day remains one of my all-time favorite comic artists). Thanks to YM for letting this go. Having the opportunity to own a page from this series is something I never would have imagined possible when I was first thumbing through the comics 30 years ago. I still have to pinch myself every time I look at it. Social/Sharing |

Just lovely. Big congrats on this splash. And I especially love it since I was dorming on Washington Square Park at the time this came out.

1993 was a stellar year for comics & music, I remember it fondly. And this series was top of the heap. Congrats on such an outstanding example from it, Ben.

Great storytelling by Bachalo and Buckingham splitting the splash to play with time and space with this real life setting that really helped to connect to the audience on a new level to reflect the emo and goth culture onto the comic scene. Representation matters.

One of the BEST pages from the series. I keep hoping to get my chance at nabbing one, but they continue to elude me. Congrats on getting yours.

Such a great series and one of the few comics where Chris's art was clean(clear) enough that you could not only tell what was going on.. but it was gorgeous and a pleasure to get lost in.
