DescriptionA classic page from the Conan run by Barry Windsor-Smith is too good an opportunity to let it pass me by...And what a page it is! Culled from the faithful adaptation of R.E. Howard's tension-filled tale "Rogues in the House", it displays young noble Murilo in rapid, fluid motion, while Conan, lying in a cell, is a volcano ready to erupt... With no less than 10 tight panels, Barry demonstrates his talent for highly-dynamic narrative, shifting angles and focus to move the story forward at a rapid pace, which nicely comes to a halt on the close-up of Conan, biding his time and getting ready to explode. As promised by the last panel, we won't have to wait for long for it to happen... Also noticeable here is Barry's increasing appeal for fine illustration with tons of exciting details... Check, for instance, the composition of Panel 3, with Murilo's horse (later featured as a pupil-less ghost-like animal), stopping in a beautiful pose, while being geometrically dominated by the pyramid-shaped roof or the temple, whose garden walls are criss-crossed by creases of decay. Also noticeable is the usage of pitch-black, ranging from starry night to evocative city-landscape before moving on to the darkest areas of Conan's cell. There is also that nice detail of the hanging chain on Panel 7 which, as we know, does not hold Conan captive anymore... But the silent portrait of a feral Conan on Panel 9 is the real takeaway here... I also like the fact that, at this time, Conan still has his necklace, a fine reminder of his first adventures alongside his helmet (which he lost in the sand dunes outside Shadizar). He would manage to retain his necklace for some time, finally letting go of it close to the Zaporoska river, near the end of BWS's Conan run. Ah, well, these were the days... And, before I forget: Sal Buscema's inks are great here as usual, providing clarity and depth to this densely-composed page. Social/Sharing |

BWS is instinctive like Conan, flowing with the story.

A great genre defining work! They put together the look and feel that not only defined the character, but also influenced all the different series trying to emulate the sensation they created.

Thanks Marcus! You're right, their Conan was the stereotype everybody kept looking at, except that I think there is an extra dimension of grace in the artwork that eluded most (if not all) of their successors!

Splendid Barry Windsor-Smith Conan page! Boy, it's fun to revisit these panels in black and white--You can really appreciate the exquisite linework when it's not all blurred with color. The sheer amount of detail BWS put into every page is so evident here. It's just magical!

Thanks Bill! This is exactly why a vintage BWS Conan page was so high on my list! And this one ticks all the boxes...
