DescriptionAn all out-and-out action page with Fandral at his dashingest and Hogun at his grimest more than holding their own against Loki's minions! Kirby unleashed, indeed!...And, despite all that's been said about Vince Colletta's inking, I find his work on this page absolutely great, perfectly fitting the King's pencils! Also, on this page, despite borders having been cut, there is enough left of the handwritten notes by the King to highlight his intentions on each panel of this page: - Panel one - "Hogun, nothing stands in his path" - Panel two - "... Mows'em down in rows" - Panel three - "Fandral enjoys fighting" - Panel four - "Hogun yells look out" Nuff said! Social/Sharing |

Formidable action page and yes, despite what some say Vinnie was well-suited to ink Jack on Thor!

Great Thor page, all the better for the action, the facial expression and the close-ups. Vinnie had more of a tendency to shortcut and simplify Jack's backgrounds - the extreme foreground stuff is glorious and very pumped-up! Love it!

Love it!I agree with you, Steve, the sheer enjoyment on Fandral's face plus the tight-jawed determination of Hogun are really perfectly enhanced by Vince's brush. Looking closely however, I can see some of the erased pencils like additional flying armour pieces on panels one and four, plus a barely visible extra henchman in both panels two and three...

Yeah, Vinnie was a very naughty boy and favoured speed over the reverence we now have for the King's pencils and oftimes amazing detail - I understand he was one of Marvel's go-to inkers if they wanted a zillion pages pushed out to a tight deadline. Fortunately any potential damage he might have done is very limited here - the power and dynamism of this action page is bursting out of the paper and nothing can stop it!

I have quite a few pages in mind (FF, Fourth World, Thor) where Vince's choices of what to ink and what to leave out are questionable. This tends to dilute the King's power in a lot of too thin lines amidst blank space... Still, I also have quite a few in mind where he really embellished the pencilwork. Obviously, on this one, another warrior on panels two and three wouldn't hurt, but somehow wouldn't add much. And the portraits of Hogun and Fandral are really cool. Even though I agree Kirby's an irrepressible force here, I think Vince added his own on the faces, making them less angular and more expressive than could have been in other hands... All in all, I could have picked a worse one for a Kirby/Colletta combination!

When Colletta's good on Kirby, he's good--and at his best, the best on Thor IMO--and he's good here. Love this page. The the Kirby comments are a FASCINATING insight into how Lee and Kirby worked together. Bravo.

And, whatever the disputes on who did what and how they felt about it, the Lee/Kirby team is unbeatable!

Nobody comes close to Jack Kirby on this kind of stuff. It's mind-boggling that this was likely one of several pages that flew off Jack's drawing table that day!

Thanks Sean! You certainly have a point! Just thinking of it is beyond imagination... Luckily, it never stopped him in his constant delivering of sheer and powerful magic!

I love Jack Kirby pages like this one! It's chock full of Kirby goodness. Look at those top two panels--Grim Hogun is smiting Loki's lackeys left and right. There are bodies all over the place laying unconscious after falling to Hogun's heavy mace! I count seven villains down in the second panel alone! And then there are the bottom two panels where Fandral is slaying even more Loki allies! He's happily dueling with four in the third panel! And then there's that wonderful fourth panel with Fandral's smiling face as he slices his way through a battery of bad guys with great pleasure! More action is packed into this one page than in entire comic books by other artists! Jack Kirby is not called the King of Comics for nothing! Fantastic pick-up, congrats!

Thanks Bill! Yes, this page has everything a Kirby fan might want! It's still on my wall since Day One and it sends me bolts of Kirby energy every time I pass it by! Oh, and about the body count, I think I've come to 8 in the second panel and 5 in the third, but who keeps the score, right? Except if Hogan and Fandral are in a Legolas/Gimli type of contest... And, by the way, there is one extra henchman in each panel that Kirby pencilled but both ended up erased by Vinnie Colletta. Talk about an embarassment of riches... That is also the Kirby way: never stop and go for the greatest!
