DescriptionWhen I discovered how storyteller Jacques Lob and artist Georges Pichard reinterpreted the Odyssey as a science-fantasy story with highly advanced humans posing for Greek Gods (their technology looking like miraculous powers to standard folks...), I found the concept brilliant in its simplicity!Unfortunately, it met with little success at the time and was published hectically. The first five chapters first appeared in Italy in Linus magazine and in France in Charlie magazine (1968-1969), then, after a long hiatus, in semi-pro fanzine Phenix that finally brought the story to conclusion in 1973-1974... Due to that long and tortuous history, it allowed Georges Pichard's art to evolve considerably. The Pop Art/Comic Book influence, so clearly visible in the 1968-1969 pages, had given place, in the later chapters, to a more mature, more classical style that would define all of his later works. In the process, one page that had been published in magazine form was omitted from either of the 2 editions of the stories in France (two volumes in 1974/1975, then one volume in 1981). This is that very page!.... However, this page was not lost for good, as it has been restored in the Italian edition in 1985 (this certainly explains the glue stains on word balloons, where French text was replaced by Italian text...). By the way, this story has also been published in the USA , at least in hardcover format, by Heavy Metal. However, I do not know if it was complete or not... (December 2015 update: According to Mark N, this was not the case! Thanks again, Mark!) My gratitude goes to Davide G and Dominique Radrizzani who helped me untangle the complex but fascinating story of the almost-lost page! A small Odyssey of sorts! Thanks to them, I'm able to add a few interesting documents to complement this piece: - A scan of this page as it appeared in Charlie Magazine N°3 in 1969 (only publishing in France) - A picture of the Italian version of this page, as it appeared in Album in 1985. But also: - A scan of the first version of panels 2 and 3 of Chapter 1 - Page 2 - The gorgeous published covers for Phenix N°32 ans N°38 As this is for me one of the timeless classics, both the original Homer story and the great reinterpretation by Lob & Pichard, I was more than thrilled to have the opportunity to find an episode of the Odyssey! Nice page from one of the brilliant literary 'reinterpretations' by the French master. It was fully published in volume in the early '80s both in France and Italy

One question though: I have what I believe to be the first album edition in French published in 2 volumes in the mid-70's by Dargaud and this page is missing (along with, I think, another one from the Cyclops section). Now I know Ulysse has been republished as a single volume in the early 80's, but, at the time, I didn't really bother checking if missing pages had been added. Can you confirm it's the case and that this one has been reinstalled in the Eole section? I'll amend my comments accordingly! Best Al

One of the classics from my childhood. BRAVO! And no, I don't believe the HEAVY METAL edition was complete.
