DescriptionI've said it before, and I persist: there was a period (late 60'-late 70's) when Gray Morrow could simply do no wrong!...His eclectic, but always tasteful choice of strips for DC, Marvel or his own Red Circle (not counting his extraordinary run as cover painter of Sci-Fi novels), never ceases to amaze me. And, while his presence was sometimes sporadic or that the strips he worked on were second-tier series, it was always a joy for me to discover his signature at the bottom of page... Case in point, El Diablo, this slightly spooky version of Zorro, co-created by Robert Kanigher and Gray Morrow, may look a little corny, but look at this splendid nocturnal ambiance, these very realistic portraits and these quietly fluid camera angles and you'll know why Gray Morrow does deserve better praise and recognition... He's a pure illustrator and the right genre will get the best of his work, probably because he likes depicting the realism in these non superhero books.

Thanks Marcus! You're right, of course: Gray Morrow mostly steered clear of super-heroes and, when he did some, it was generally on the non-powered types, like Black Canary and The Vigilante... This definitely was his forte!

Merci Adom ! Les westerns me font toujours de l'effet, surtout quand ils sont aussi bien illustrés !

Wow! You don't see a lot of Gray Morrow artwork around. What a terrific example of Morrow's art! I love this El Diablo page from All Star Western. Morrow was very talented at depicting realistic scenes which you can see here. I love that opening panel with El Diablo on his horse approaching the small town. Morrow's talent can also be seen on the second panel with the outlaws discussing the posse chasing them. Morrow really creates believable characters with interesting faces. You can also see Marrow's talent in the third panel with El Diablo climbing up the wall and his horse waiting down below. But best of all is that final panel of El Diablo standing alone, his black cape and hat keeping his identity disguised. Morrow's inkwork throughout is superb, with a mixture of stippling and crosshatching that really makes the scenes believable. Great pick-up, congrats!

Thanks Bill! I agree of course, this page is a real calling card for Gray Morrow's versatile talent! It's almost an embarrassment of riches! But I have to say that the first panel is my favorite (at least for now!): the dense line work of the tree shade on El Diablo's silhouette, the delicate silhouette of the monestary in the distance and, most of all, that single gunshot, actually almost faint, but so loud in the silence! One thing for sure: I'm not done watching that one, looking for wonders...

Thanks Rick! I don't know if he picked his series, but this one is clearly a natural for him!...
