DescriptionApart from the obvious delight to see John Byrne launch his own hometown superhero team on a grand scale after having used them as strong support players as often as he could, I was also very glad to see him come back to inking himself, as he had done, to maximum impact, in his first batch of issues of the Fantastic Four...On this particular page, I love the dense panel grid. Restricted space inevitably leads to scaling down the effects and tell the essential. But, here, the nocturnal mood is ever present and strongly reminds me of John Carpenter's The Thing. Even if the Super-Skrull had become quite obvious at this moment, the tension caused by the "unknown" menace is still very palpable on this page. And I also love how his signature seems to blend into the rock in Panel 6, almost as if he wanted it to be part of the scene and avoid any distraction to the atmosphere... Finally, thanks to The Thing (Stan and Jack"s one, this time!) for a one-panel cameo in an unexpected role: lying still! Social/Sharing |

We will never experience comics again the way we did during Byrne's artistic palooza. A page like this is a fine reminder of the days when we would gather a few bucks together and grab some comics. Great stuff Al.

Thanks my friend! When reading this the first time, I thought the Silver Age was coming back all over again! How cool that was...

I was able to get a splash page from him during his wonder woman run but this is much better. Byrne was in his prime during his FF and Alpha Flight runs.

Byrne's run on Alpha Flight was fantastic! Love the layout of this page!
Thanks Nick! I may be wrong, but since they were his babies, I always felt John Byrne put extra love and fun in Alpha Flight!

Un très belle page, la 5e case m'a marqué durant des années ! Félicitations, elle est vraiment très belle.
Merci ! J'adore ces pages denses et serrées qui emmènent l'histoire à toute allure... Byrne savait bien les faire à cette époque...
